MODULE 6 · LESSON 6.A

Maternal Health Programme Performance Review

Estimated time: 45 minutes

A fictional NGO is implementing a maternal health education programme in four communities. It aims to improve access to maternal health information, deliver community education and strengthen routine reporting. All figures are fictional.

Dataset A: programme activities
IndicatorBaselineQuarterly targetActual result
Education sessions conducted02418
Health workers trained52016
Community outreach visits41612
Dataset B: routine reporting
Reporting measureNumber
Reports expected16
Reports received12
Reports received by the deadline9

Dataset C: during approved feedback activities, some community members report that sessions are often scheduled when many people are working or trading. The team has not yet investigated whether this explains lower-than-planned participation.

  1. Task 1. Calculate target achievement for sessions, workers trained, and outreach visits. Use actual divided by target, times 100.
  2. Task 2. Calculate reporting completeness: reports received divided by reports expected, times 100.
  3. Task 3. Calculate the percentage of expected reports received on time. A report counts as on time only if it arrived by the deadline. Explain why completeness and timeliness differ.
  4. Task 4. Identify one input, one activity, one output, one possible outcome and one possible impact.
  5. Task 5. Write a short paragraph with at least two calculated results, a reporting problem, no claim that maternal health outcomes improved, and one issue that still needs investigation.
  6. Task 6. Recommend three actions. At least one must address reporting, and at least one must address community feedback.
  7. Task 7. Prepare a one-page report: overview, indicator results, completeness and timeliness, challenges, recommendations, and data sources.

Module 6 completion checklist

You can now interpret basic programme indicators, recognise a reporting gap, and prepare a short M&E summary that tells a team what to investigate next.

Next: Module 7, Health Data Research, Interpretation and Decision Support. It will cover practical research questions, basic descriptive analysis, limitations, and recommendations.
